" Absolutely satisfied. I had no previous camping experience and now feel as though I'd be ready for a trip without a guide. "

The First Day: Wilderness Treks

On the starting day of the wilderness hike, students and instructors will meet at 8:00 a.m. at AMS. This is a busy day, so please be on time and take care of all personal business before hand. If you are driving to Talkeetna, you may leave your car at AMS.

After an orientation, instructors will do a check of each student's equipment and issue you any items you may need to ensure you are properly outfitted. After packs are packed and any personal luggage and valuables are stored, we take box lunches and drive in the AMS van to our trailhead, typically a 1.5 to 2 hour drive.

After unloading the van, we review our maps and start hiking to our first camp. We'll start on a trail, but by the day's end, we'll be walking on the spongy tundra without trails. We set up camp, cook dinner, and have classes with the instructors.
